GILBERT--In a heated hitting battle at Gilbert High School Wednesday night, the South Aiken Thoroughbreds beat the Gilbert Indians 8-5. Fans got to see an offensive battle as the two teams banged out a total of 24 hits for the night.
Bats got hot early and by the end of the first inning both teams were on the board with two runs.
With the game tied and two on in the bottom of the second, Gilbert took the first lead when starting pitcher Mitch Spires singled to left, bringing in Jaylin Jennings and Jared Williams who had both reached base earlier on singles.
South Aiken added one run in the third when Preston Dawson doubled, took third on a wild pitch and was brought in by Joey Smithers’ RBI groundout.
It proved a dismal inning for Gilbert’s pitching staff as South Aiken batted through its entire order. After three walks and five hits, South Aiken to took the lead 7-4. Gilbert’s offense followed up with another run in the bottom of the fourth. Mitch Spires added his fourth RBI for the night to bring in Jared Williams, who scored his third run of the evening.
South Aiken’s Mason Collins scored the Thoroughbreds’ final run off a hit by pitch, a pair of wild pitches and a sac fly by Trey Polewski.
Gilbert’s attempt to come back in the bottom of the inning was thwarted by reliever Josh Kiser who retired all three hitters he faced for the save.
