Clayon McCathern
High School: Coach McCathern played 4 years of Varsity Baseball at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, SC (93-96). He set the school record with 32 Wins in his Career and twice tied the school record of 10 wins in a season (94, 95). He was selected 1st Team All-State (95) and was a 3-time All-Conference and All-Area selection (94-96). Coach McCathern signed with the University of South Carolina out of High School
American Legion: Coach McCathern played 3 Seasons of American Legion Baseball with Irmo Post 174 (94-96) where he was a member of the 1994 Upper State Championship team and the 1995 State Championship team. One interesting note is that he hit a Pinch-Hit Walk-Off HR in his final at-bat.
College: In 1998, Coach McCathern transferred to Montreat (NC) College (NAIA) and played 3 seasons (99-01). As a submarine Closer, he was a member of the 2000 TVAC Conference Championship Team and was among the team leaders in Saves.
Athletes in Action: Coach McCathern played 3 summers with Athletes In Action (1997, 1998, 2001), playing games in 17 states and 4 foreign countries, spanning 2 continents. In 2001, his AIA team was a member of the M.I.N.K. League (Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas). He lead the team in appearances as a relief pitcher and “struck out the side” in the last inning of his final appearance.
Previous Coaching Experience: Coach McCathern served as an Assistant Coach on two American Legion teams - Cayce Post 130 (2000) and Lexington Post 7 (2003). In 2007, he established McCathern Baseball School, providing private hitting and pitching lessons.
Personal: Born and raised in Columbia, SC, he currently resides in Lexington, SC with his wife of 9 years, the former Regan McKenzie of Irmo, SC and their 2 children, Hodges (6) and Manning (3).
